Two rows. Two different footprints. Start with the room you need, then choose the powertrain that fits your week.

Start with the space you actually use.

If most trips mean one or two people, a work bag and a tight parking space, put the Corolla Cross on your list. If the back seat and luggage area work hard every week, start your comparison with the RAV4. Then sit in both: a larger exterior does not guarantee a better driving position.

The smaller footprint

Corolla Cross

Worth a closer look when parking space matters and you want to compare a gas model with a conventional hybrid.

More room behind you

RAV4

Worth a closer look when rear passengers, luggage or a plug-in-hybrid option are central to the decision.

Scope: 2026 U.S. models. This is a specifications-based buying guide, not a firsthand road test. Toyota has announced a 2027 Corolla Cross; its equipment and figures are not mixed into this comparison. Confirm the model year on the vehicle you are considering.

Size, seats and the Nashville parking test.

2026 reference configurations: RAV4 Hybrid LE and Corolla Cross gas reference. Inches unless stated. Figures are Toyota's published specifications; not a measurement of vehicles at the dealership. [1] [2]
SpecRAV4 Hybrid LECorolla Cross gas
Length181.0176.1
Body width73.071.9
Front legroom41.042.9
Rear legroom37.832.0
Cargo behind rear seat37.8 cu. ft.24.0 cu. ft.

The reference Corolla Cross is 4.9 inches shorter and 1.1 inches narrower. That is useful context for a downtown garage or a crowded apartment lot, but these body widths are not mirror-to-mirror clearances. Measure your space with room to open doors, unload bags and walk past the vehicle.

Trim matters: Toyota lists the RAV4 Woodland at 182.0 inches long and GR SPORT at 182.9; both are 74.0 inches wide. Do not apply the LE dimensions to those versions. The Corolla Cross column uses Toyota’s gas comparison reference, not every hybrid or AWD configuration. [1]

Set the front seat before judging the back.

Adjust the driver's seat for your normal position, then sit directly behind it. Check knee clearance, foot space and how easily you get through the door. If an adult regularly rides with you from Hendersonville or Goodlettsville into Nashville, include that person in the comparison. Published legroom helps narrow the list; it cannot tell you whether a seat cushion feels right.

Load your usual luggage, not an imaginary maximum.

Bring the stroller, folded mobility aid or two suitcases you actually use. Test the opening, load-floor height and whether everything fits with the rear seats upright. Keep passenger and cargo needs together: folding a seat solves a luggage problem only if nobody needs that seat. Ask about the exact hybrid or AWD vehicle's cargo specification before making a final decision.

For 2026, there is no gas-only RAV4.

The RAV4 lineup is exclusively hybrid or plug-in hybrid. LE, XLE Premium and Limited are conventional hybrid grades; SE, XSE and Woodland also appear in the electrified lineup, while GR SPORT is a plug-in hybrid. Configuration and drivetrain choices vary by grade. A conventional hybrid does not need to be plugged in; a plug-in hybrid adds a charging decision to your shopping checklist. [1]

Corolla Cross has no plug-in-hybrid option in this 2026 U.S. lineup. Real mileage depends on the route, weather, load and driving. Use the exact vehicle's EPA label for a final comparison, especially when moving between FWD and AWD or between different wheel-and-tire packages.

For a Madison-to-Nashville commute, write down how much of your week is stop-and-go versus highway driving. For a plug-in RAV4, also establish where you could charge and whether that location is reliably available. Do not count on savings from charging you cannot regularly do. On a road trip, passenger comfort and usable luggage space still matter alongside fuel economy.

Compare the vehicle and the whole price.

Start with the same model year and the features you need. Compare a gas Corolla Cross, its hybrid alternative and a specific RAV4 grade as separate quotes. MSRP is a reference price; destination charges, factory options, accessories, the dealer's selling price, taxes and fees affect the total. This page is not a price quote or a promise of inventory, rebates or financing approval.

Ask for an itemized out-the-door quote and identify optional products before comparing payments. A lower payment alone can hide a longer term or a larger down payment. If your current vehicle still has a loan, use the financed trade-in guide and equity calculator to separate its value from its payoff.

Make the choice around your week.

Start with Corolla Cross if you want a smaller footprint, rarely fill the back seat and prefer to weigh gas against hybrid without a plug-in option. Check that your regular cargo fits before deciding it is enough vehicle.

Start with RAV4 if rear-seat use and luggage regularly compete for space, or you specifically want to evaluate a plug-in hybrid. Check the actual grade's dimensions, price and charging needs rather than treating every RAV4 as identical.

If you need a third row, neither of these two-row SUVs answers that requirement. Read the Highlander vs. Grand Highlander comparison or the Sienna vs. Grand Highlander family guide instead.

Before a comparison appointment.

  1. Confirm which model year, trim and drivetrain are available to view. Ask whether both vehicles can be compared during the same visit.
  2. Bring the people and ordinary gear that determine your space needs. For child-seat fit and installation, follow both manuals and consult a qualified child passenger safety technician.
  3. Check visibility, seat adjustment, loading and parking on each vehicle. Ask about a test-drive route that includes the kind of driving you actually do.
  4. Compare written prices for the exact vehicles. Use the Nashville car-buying checklist before traveling to Madison.
